DEBUT EP RELEASE - ELI 'Full Form'

It may be her debut, but ELI is a Full(y) formed performer on new EP

London-born ELI has her voice and artistry embeddd in the power of community. She has established herself as a powerhouse performer, building an eclectic fanbase after touring with the likes of Lauren Mayberry of Chvrches, Art School Girlfriend and just earlier this month, she appeared at Scala in London with Australian Rapper and RnB artist Tkay Maidza. Now ELI stands proud on her own, recording, producing an independently releasing her debut EP, Full Form.

Through a four-track debut ELI intimately explores themes of love, loneliness and self expression all examined through the personal lens of her self-mastered lo-fi melodies. Standing at just 13 minutes, Full form is a brief but exhilarating snapshot into the mind of this rising star. ELI is indie in every sense of the word and she owns it.

Full Form feels very London- and I don’t just mean the authentic vocal performance edged with a visible London accent. But ELI captivates an amalgamation of genres, fluidly melding into a singular cohesive artistic voice, in a way that feels very true to a lived city experience. She is indie, she is soul, she is triphop, she is alternative and she is hard to pin down, which only makes for a more interesting listening experience.

Full form is a strong debut from ELI, but two of the tracks in particular stand out; the EP’s opener ‘Promises’ and its closing track ‘Sin’.

‘Promises’, as self-described by ELI was ‘birthed from a literal series of unfortunate events but now is an ode to empowerment’. The song describes the loss of certainty when you’re promised the world only to be left with nothing; when all hope feels gone and you feel insignificant and let down. But ‘Promises’ is not a melancholic wallowing ballad and instead ELI channels this feeling of disappointment into an enchanting soulful exploration into finding value in your own existence. It’s poignant, powerful and simple.

Full form may not be verbose, but it succinctly describes a journey from insecurity to self acceptance. ‘Do you Love’ is a upbeat afro-pop inspired track that includes some compelling production choices that abstractify ELI’s background vocals until they feel percussive. In this track ELI describes the echoes and the ghosts of the past following you into the present and causing you to doubt your current perspectives. ‘Parallel’ is a more low-key soulful melody that really showcases ELI’s ability to deliver whisper-tone vocals effectively. ELI’s voice is the star of this track, her surprisingly low natural tone of voice is layered with several different harmonies which intwine beautifully and demonstrate her strong vocal range. Again, ELI uses her voice as another instrument, her harmonies become absorbed into the percussive elements of the song and its eerie and captivating.

Finally on ‘Sin’ ELI feels ‘fully formed’ in this journey and ready to accept herself as she is. Speaking of the track ELI stated ‘We come into this world alone and seek love as we are. ‘Sin’ symbolises the /other “a person that doesn’t follow the mould of traditionalism” and this often comes at a cost’. The punchy chorus reclaims the word ‘sin’, and turns into a positive, uplifting and dance-friendly idea that allows you to accept yourself as imperfect, unpredictable and creative.

Full form is personal and introspective but it also encapsulates the very universal feeling of growth, uncertainty and acceptance. A truly impressive feat for a debut.
