Marking her first release since 2022, ‘Undone’ is a beautiful return to form from South London based neo soul artist Ego Ella May.
It’s the first single from FIELDNOTES III, the last in her FIELDNOTES collection of releases. On her social media she describes it as “about letting go of control, ditching the facade that so many of us find ourselves latching on to, the question of what would happen if we simply left it all behind & started again.. it’s possible!”.
The first verse describes how she recently read ‘I May Be Wrong’, the bestselling book by Bjørn Natthiko Lindeblad who began as a business executive in Sweden but later decided to train in Thailand to become a Buddhist monk. It encourages readers to let go of things they can’t control and to find stillness in life. “It’s such a beautifully written book & it stuck with me for so long afterwards that I decided to write a song about it”, May says.
A line in the second verse (‘Cleo said, “God’s love is free”’) also features a subtle reference to the song ‘Free’ by Sault and its lead singer Cleo Sol. Back in 2019, May told Clash that Sol was one of her inspirations: “I get a sense that she doesn’t really care about being popular etc. She just likes to sing and write songs, and that’s what draws me to her the most.”
We’ve been waiting for a return from May and this track doesn’t disappoint in the slightest. Her voice is smooth and seductive, the instrumentals blending beautifully behind her vocals which are the clear showstopper here. If this is anything to go by, FIELDNOTES III will be a must listen.
