Sans Soucis, the uniquely bold London-based singer/songwriter/producer, just released what they call a self-proclaimed ‘period song’. This comes after a successful summer playing festivals all over the UK and Europe, in venues such as Rome’s Spazio Griot and Green Man Festival.
Sans Soucis (a name which means ‘carefree’, as their grandmother used to call them) came onto the music scene in 2018, weaving stories of their mental health, spirituality, gender identity, and immigrant experience into their upbeat, catchy songs. Much of their work showcases their silky smooth vocals with stripped down beats, reminiscent of jazz and pop from their Italian and Congolese background.
This particular single confronts the taboo of periods and PMS head on, elucidating a collective feminine chorus with layered vocals, contrasting a sweet tone with sharp lyrics; ‘I’ll cut your privilege into pieces’.
The video features Soucis amid a plain white bedroom set, standing utop a podium in a blood-red coat, black latex gloves and chunky black combat boots. Not moody, not angry, they vocalises the inner monologue inside those whose periods are invalidated, symptoms diminished, and mood swings demonised.
From an artist who previously challenged neo-imperialism in the Congo through their 2021 single ‘Games’, ‘Lost When I’m Around You’ comes as a forthright challenge to body censorship in the media, particularly concerning those who have periods. As well as this, however, Sans Soucis’ songwriting creates a space for healing on an individual level, as they constantly advocates empowerment of the self and loving support for others. Championing gratitude and understanding, Sans Soucis is a refreshing face against the soundboard of greed and superficiality that the music industry often becomes. ‘Lost When I’m Around You’ joins their discography as another meaningful piece of introspective songwriting, wrapped in angelic vocals and a snappy beat.
If you’re playing this on repeat while clutching a hot water bottle in bed (like me), why not check them out live in London, New York, or LA in the coming months
