The latest single from May, Brian Cox, stems from a fascination with the universe and astronomy. Expanding on the inspiration for the track, May writes: ‘I’ve always had a deep interest in all things intergalactic. I’ve also been a fan of Brian for as long as I can remember. After listening to Brian talk about the universe it ignited a new found fascination in me, and getting to meet him through writing this song was an absolute dream come true’.
The song starts with gently-strummed guitar chords, before May’s vocals enter and are immediately captivating. Her rumunitive lyricism combined with her ethereal voice create an all-encompassing soundscape not too dissimilar from the celestial ones Brian Cox talks about. The chorus sings lyrics such as ‘Space is way too big / rocket ships and drones make me feel sick / I don’t want to know about Goldilocks Zones / or dying blackholes where you never grow old / God, I hate the cosmos’. As angelic as her voice may be, May never fails to juxtapose her mellow and honeyed vocals with quite piercing storytelling. Her lyrics genuinely call for reflection.
May has announced that she will be headlining Camden Assembly hall on July 24th, just two days before the release of her brand new EP, Deep Sea Creatures, on July 26th. May will also be supporting singer-songwriter Searows on tour later this year; it seems her music is rapidly gaining the attention it deserves.
