NEW SINGLE RELEASE - She's In Parties 'L Word'

20.09.23

The Colchester-based quartet "She's In Parties has released "The L Word," following the success of "End Scene" and "Cherish."

Dedicated to their dreamy indie rock, the ‘L Word’ takes it to a whole new level. Listening in, it’s fused with classic inspirations like The Cure mixed with Slowdive’s distorted guitar, but the returning melodies and unpredictable swells and shifts remind us this gothic quartet creates an innovatively new sound from our fondness of 90s alt-rock. The band’s moniker, “She’s in Parties,” was, after all, taken from a hit single by the English rock group Bauhaus.

Featuring lead vocalis from Katie Dillon, strikingly familiar to the vocals of Kate Winslet with soft whispering melodies that soar with serenading emotion, she also plays guitar alongside bandmate Herbie Weisman, Matt Corman on drums, and Charlie Johnson on bass. The pre-chorus, to “The L Word” shines with Matt’s explosive comping and Charlie’s virtuoso on the bass punches through, we are reminded of the band’s shoegaze influence.

Although these sudden dynamics, or subito, might remind us of Paramore, the soulful harmonies are incredibly comforting, creating an almost hazy familiarity for each new note. With its dreamy cadences and bright modal inflexions, the song excellently captures the discomfort and awful sensation of regret we all worry about revealing our love too early and of being too much at the beginning of a relationship.

The music video (directed by Leon Brinkley) truly brings this to life, with its overly saturated purples casting psychedelic shadows over the party streamers and a single deflated red heart balloon.

As the soulful harmonies build, Katie sings, ‘Don’t mind what I say though, / I still want to be loved’ which tragically surmises the nascent hope of standing alone with your feelings. As well as supporting Beach Lab on their Autumn Tour, She’s in Parties plans to return to Essex this autumn with an EP release show on the 6th of October at the Three Wise Monkeys in Colchester. They will be supported by other local artists, PORTEOUS and Emma Sampson.
