From collaborations with Kölsch and Franky Wah, Lunar June has released ‘Heart Scream Summer’ the newest single after her debut EP. Other songs including ‘holding onto u’ and ‘you/feeling’ first gave us a tantalising taste of this promising new artist. The heavy pulsing synth combined with the scintillating highlights of classic electropop creates an absolute bop you’re obligated to dance to with careless ease. Born and bred in West London, Lunar June grew up performing in orchestras and bands to finally write and produce her own original music that’s highly endorsed by music industry experts, such as Melita Dennett and Gemma Bradley.
Lunar June, real name Olivia Judd, may still be considered an emerging talent after only releasing her debut earlier this year with her EP ‘jaded/faded’ but ‘Heart Scream Summer’ holds a surprising amount of sage perspective for a novice, with its incredibly soulful lyrics juxtaposing the light hearted instrumentation. With lyrics like ‘Grit my teeth and fall by the waist side/I feel numb and I hate my insides’- Lunar June embellishes the forlorn meaning of these electro pop melodies. Her dynamic range that often fluctuates between airy highs and to soulful lows are clearly influenced from artists like Joni Mitchell or Lorde, but Charlie XCX’s inspiration is so clear, it’s mentioned is in the opening lyric. (‘I’ll listen to Crash/And melt my heart away’) The idiosyncratic nature of the lyrics becomes more frantic as it climaxes towards the chorus soaring through revelations that truly resonate with those listeners in all aspects of early adulthood. The frantic metre arguably resembles an internal conflict but the absence of heavy drums or rock aspects is important ; it portrays a frustration subdued by loneliness and disconnection.
According to an interview with She Makes Music, Lunar June admitted “I live with so much fear and dread of the future.’ All these anxieties are fabricated in this whimsical narrative of its music video. ‘The monster in the video represents this terrified part of myself’ Lunar June added, ‘it’s something I’m constantly trying to run away from and suppress;’ Here, perhaps Lunar June alludes to the anxieties that lie within the overwhelming potential our future holds, how to stay on a path when you find yourself constantly parting from others. This is beautifully put in the chorus line ‘I get sad in every cool summer/they’re all high and I’m going under’ that sticks in a
mournful expression despite the fast tempo.
Collaborating again with recording engineer Luke Marsden, this is the first music video from Lunar June, and from her warm and happy visuals to the bright music and a speculative ‘Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared’ inspired red monster, this curated single poetically exposes the lingering inertia summer presents and the dubious inconsistencies that follow. In an interview with Haste Magazine, Lunar June mentioned she has finished writing her second EP and plans to release more singles throughout the year. ‘The tracks on the second EP are truly my favourite things I’ve ever created and I am so excited for people to hear it!” and her latest single is further proof Lunar June is undoubtedly bound for success.
