I’ve been on a quest to discover emerging female and non-binary musicians from the UK, navigating through a challenging maze of sounds. However, occasionally I come across something that truly stands out. This time, it’s the brand-new single release titled ‘Down in the Deep’ from Emily Magpie. Trust me, this artist is one to watch, and she’s already receiving high praise from respected musicians and producers, including Nabihah Iqbal. With this being Emily’s debut under the Def Pressé label, it’s evident that Magpie has planned some big things for 2023.

Based in Bristol, Emily Magpie’s true strength lies in her production, and I wasn’t surprised to find out she has worked as a producer and musician for over 7 years. Self-described as a “left-field pop track” the quality of her latest single is exceptional, effortlessly evoking emotions of introspection and contemplation in anyone who chooses to immerse themselves. Her soft vocals blend seamlessly with the ambience and atmospheric soundscape, accompanied by the subtle elegance of the piano, synth and guitar. The result is a grand and awe-inspiring piece that manages to remain modest and unassuming. This is a gorgeous celebration of Magpie’s creativity and imagination.

Drawing inspiration from artists such as Sudan Archives, Sylvan Esso, Maggie Rogers while working with her bandmates Kieran Ball and Max Harrison she brings a live rawness to her sound, her new single is a glimpse into what we can expect from this prodigious rising talent ahead of her EP release titles ‘She’ on June 7th.

On the upcoming EP Emily says “I created this EP to explore my own experience of being a woman- which is beautiful and messy! I wanted to extend this out in a universal way to others, all with their own unique stories and voices. The feminine, which exists outside of gender. There’s beauty, celebration, darkness and the unknown. Feminine energy is badass and there’s a massive history of it being suppressed which it’s important to challenge by us being heard.”
