Amie Blu "pretty"

South London singer-songwriter Amie Blu has officially released her hotly anticipated new single ‘pretty’.

Warm and delicate, ‘pretty’ channels ethereal vocals and soft strings, but also bears a nightmarish quality that lies beneath the surface. The 20-year-old musician revealed the story behind the track last month, sharing how it pays homage to a girl an ex-lover had cheated on her with. Making light of the situation, Blu posted a video of herself on social media dancing to the single, candidly stating: “I got cheated on and wrote a song about how pretty the girl waspretty sad story.”

Unpicking the rawest of emotions, ‘pretty’ doesn’t shy away from insecurities or discomfort, forcing you to sit with those feelings instead. ‘I hate competing / I always lose / I get inside my head / Don’t make it through’ Blu sings, an unusual combination of pain and nonchalance oozing from her voice. ‘She’s got a pretty face / Just like the stars / Yeah you can’t look awayNo I won’t blame you / I’d do the same”, she adds, unable to deny how attractive the girl is, and that she too would do the same, an agonising yet refreshing take for a song about romantic betrayal.

A lilting blend of pop and soul, the ballad was coproduced by one of Blu’s longtime collaborators – fellow rising musician and beatmaker, Humble the Great. After several days tucked away in the studio, Humble clearly found the beauty in the song’s simplicity, laying down the initial chords and recording some harmonies of his own, before expertly layering Blu’s vocals, and piano from Kamal., a multi-instrumentalist and musical prodigy.

Through nostalgic visuals and lump-in-your-throat lyrics, Blu sketches out her heartbreak in a somewhat mellow fashion, allowing us into a deeply personal extension of herself without giving into anger or resentment. Despite the stomach-dropping subject matter, rustic guitar and twinkly keys conjure images of moonlight, pink sheets and wandering hands. There is still love that can be found here.

The emerging French-born artist made her Glastonbury debut last summer and is set to play Love Supreme Festival this July, with more exciting performances to be announced. As she continues to make her ascent, there is no doubt a full-length album on the horizon. With rumours circulating of a bigger body of work to be unveiled later this year, the track’s artwork continues the sophisticated storytelling etched into previous singles, specifically ‘everything about her’. Blu plays with muted, suburban living spaces and feminine decor, making them all the more surreal by introducing puffer jackets and baseball bats, a possible hint towards the conflicting emotions and overarching themes within her next project.

Following on from 2023’s crumbs in my bed and 2022’s 5 for U, her next release is guaranteed to be pure magic.
