With a soulful sound and clear R&B and Hip-Hop influences, Ain’t Easy is a light and dreamy soundscape where Demae is free to offload with introspective lyrics. The song has a strong backbeat and bass groove which you can’t help but jam to, but the smooth and silky vocals keep the mood chilled and relaxing. An effortless delivery and an easy listen.
Demae’s been on the scene for a while, initially as one third of the experimental Hip-Hop band Hawk House, then as a solo singer, songwriter and producer with the release of her debut project Life Works Out…Usually in 2020. She decided to take a break after this, focusing on herself and experimenting with her sound. For the artist, music has always been a creative outlet where she can be spontaneous and try out new ideas. She attributes much of her musical creativity to her upbringing and experiences: her father introduced her to Hip-Hop artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Madlib, J Dilla, while her mother’s Nigerian roots brought traditional Igbo music into her life. Her songs highlight her rich experiences, and she pulls inspiration from many different styles. This is what makes each release so exciting; what will she do next?
Following her EP Deliver Me, released September of last year, Ain’t Easy marks a strong return. Demae, when speaking about the inspiration behind the lyrics, said that the track is about ‘navigating the complexities of love and growth. It’s reflective and hopeful, which is why I wanted the visualiser to feel so atmospheric and dreamlike. It’s a glimpse into the emotional journey that inspired the song’ (the music video is definitely worth a watch!). The track was also recorded in one take, which the artist believes speaks to the ‘vulnerability of the music itself’.
With artistic freedom at the forefront of her creative process and a range of styles to pull from, Demae is sure to impress with whatever she decides to do next. Ain’t Easy is streaming on all platforms now.
