London-based artist, multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter SOFT LAD aka Sophie Galpin has released her second EP ‘Give It A Go’. She also announced her tour which started on November 2nd, launching her new EP in London at the Notting Hill Arts Club.
SOFT LAD opens her EP with ‘The Human Condition’, a single full of raw and honest emotions. The song is about making mistakes and apologizing for them yet regretting having made them in the first place. The lyrics are relatable, depicting the complexity of the human condition with phrases like ‘I wish I could’ve done the right thing instead of dealing with regret’. The sound explodes during the chorus, reflecting the artist’s exploration of love and pain within friendships.
Following this heartwarming single, the next track on the album is ‘365’. Completely different from the first track, ‘365’ is an upbeat pop song full of percussion instruments. Although the lyrics indicate a past heartbreak, ‘365’ centres on how good it feels to be in love again and longing to share that love with your person.
SOFT LAD shows off just how unapologetically queer she is with the third track ‘MUNA’, stating that it is the ‘epitome of the type of gig that a lesbian might go to’ when seeking a new partner. The lyrics talk about the anger of seeing your partner distance themselves from you at the first inconvenience, looking for someone new. The sound has a strong pop influence with a touch of soft rock and indie vibes, giving ‘MUNA’ an edgy flavour. It’s a catchy banger that will make you want to scream and dance it out in a club.
The fourth track is ‘Tell Me If You’re Over Me’. Touching upon falling in and out of love in her two previous songs, this track is an exploration of the angst that comes with not feeling secure in your relationship. Although the sound does not catch on as
strongly as the others on the EP, ‘Tell Me If You’re Over Me’ includes a bridge with beautifully layered harmonies that build up to the last chorus.
Last but certainly not least on the EP is ‘Least of My Worries’. This song will immerse you in feelings of nostalgia, reminiscing a sound from the past. SOFT LAD describes it as the ‘process of falling in love’. Heavily influenced by pop music, this powerful track delves into the beauty and hopefulness of love.
This is an incredible EP, chronicling the breadth of human experiences. SOFT LAD is currently on tour. If you find yourself in Manchester, Brighton or Birmingham this month, make sure to check out her performance at one of her three upcoming gigs.
