The title ‘Big Red’ refers to the pub she met her partner in, and the new release certainly doesn’t hold back in terms of vulnerability. Through the use of these powerful anecdotes and stunning vocals, Katie provides us with a heart-wrenching, authentic account of the navigation of relationships in your 20’s- and these raw emotions behind the music is what her fanbase can’t seem to get enough of.

Beginning with ‘Sensation’ and ending with ‘Your Ex’, the 5 tracks chronologically follow the painful rise and fall of an intense relationship. Describing how the tracks began to tie together to create this narrative, the singer says,“It was clear to me that ‘September’ should come first. It’s about new beginnings and about leaving old flames behind for this person.’

Katie pokes fun at her own rise to stardom on the internet, making her all the more relatable, whilst perfectly depicting human insecurity and the way we compare ourselves to others in the song Guestlist. ’I stay cringe on socials, its all about content. She’ll have a real job.’

The artist reflects on both the challenges and the pay-offs of being so direct with her lyrics. ‘It’s the only way I can do it well. I’ve had moments where I’m like, “I might fake it next time.” Because I write so anecdotally and specifically, there’s no words minced. You know exactly where we are, what’s happening, who it is. I love listening to that stuff so I’m OK with that.’

Admittedly drawing inspiration from artists such as Pheobe Bridgers, the young musicians sound remains both ‘pop-folkey’ and melodramatic- carrying on beautifully from her previous work.

Following the whirlwind success of her single, ‘Complex’, Katie hit the ground running with The New York Times writing that the song had, ‘allowed Katie to take her place in an impressive lineage of female singer-songwriters,’ and the release of Big Red goes to show there is no sign she is slowing down
