OCTOBER SINGLE RELEASE - Aunty Freeda 'Medo'

Words by Layla Wheatley

The Leeds-based group Aunty Freeda released their first-ever single on the 27th of October, and it is a spiritual, progressive journey of melodic and harmonic interest.

Comprised of talented singers and instrumentalists, the band Aunty Freeda is comprised of Katie on the flute and backing vocals, Kamil on the violin, Billy playing the drums, Adam on the bass guitar, Louis on the guitar, and Anna, the lead singer. They are a real feel-good artist who seeks enjoyment and emotional release in their music.

This piece has been over a year in the making, and it was definitely worth the wait. The lead singer, Anna, is the main songwriter for the band and eloquently weaves her classical vocal training and Georgian culture into achieving a unique folk-like sound reminiscent of Kate Bush’s tone quality and vocal range. The band draws from a multitude of musical influences, such as Kate Bush, The Dresden Dolls, BCNR, and Tori Amos, to name a few. This can really be seen in Medo, with the instrumental communication and the approach to rhythm and metre throughout.

The song begins with a lyrical and emotive piano riff that sets the initial atmosphere before continuing into a whimsical vocal line before introducing harmony and instrumental communication. With frequent tempo and metre changes, the effect of an emotional whirlwind is imagined. Towards the end of the Medo, Anna descends into a lyrical madness, demonstrating impressive voice control with vocal jumps and slides, repeating her departing sentiment of ‘I want to stay’.

They frequent event hot spots in the Leeds area, such as Hyde Park Bookclub and Soft Launch Leeds, with their next performance on the 25th of November at Royal Park Cellars in Leeds, playing alongside Afrodesia, so make sure to look out for this band there! They have been described in concert as ‘impressive with a high-energy performance.’ The only thing left to wonder is: if this is what they can achieve as a first release, what could be next in store for Aunty Freeda?
