We should all be happy that Martha Goddard didn’t listen to the opinion of her ex because if she had then we’d never have been able to hear her new single ‘Voices’
As she describes to New Sound Generation, the song actually started as a lockdown project using Logic and is the “first proper song” she made with the software. She played it to “an old fling at the time, and they were distinctly unimpressed by it”. She only continued to work on it after a friend convinced her to do so.
And luckily she did as it’s eerie melody harkens back to the Twilight era of music that seems to be having a resurgence online at the moment due to TikTok’s love of Y2K pop culture. The chorus is almost gothic with elements of Shakespeare’s Sister, Kate Bush (who she’s described being a fan of) or even Florence & the Machine and her backing vocals are haunting as she wails over the instrumentals.
This could very much be a song for witches with both its gothic sound and lyrics such as “wave your spell I want to feel again” but Goddard describes it as more of a motivational song: “It’s a song about the voices in your head that tell you are not good enough. There is always someone out there who is better than you, more talented. But it’s important to do the things that you love simply because you love them, and I truly believe this”.
She recently announced that this will be the first track on her upcoming EP ‘It Comes In Waves’ and we’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for when it arrives.
