。・:* New Single Release ⋆。: Fiyahdred “Bad Trip” Fiyahdred drops ‘Bad Trip’ under SAFFRON on a mission to revive black & queer electronic music: 20.03.24 Words by Aude Flanda https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRLFnReBCz8 Last week, London based producer and DJ, Fiyahdred, dropped their latest single “Bad Trip” in collaboration with SAFFRON, a community supporting women and non-binary artists. This marks the 6th of a steady wave of releases since embarking on their new musical journey, showing no signs of slowing down. Born and raised in South London, Fiyadred’s distinct sound, Afro-diasporic meets UK Garage & Funky, is a direct reflection of their roots drawing inspo from their mum’s r&b, garage and loversrock collection, and brother’s stories of UK funky club nights. Formerly known as Bamz, they garnered a strong fanbase in the Funky and Amapiano scene by releasing under club Djembe. After a 2 year break, and a rebrand, Bamz – now Fiyahdred – set out on a path to create music more unapologetically, kickstarting with their first EP‘Anyway (Do it)’ in 2022. The artist soon gained recognition from major players in dance music and was dubbed ‘one to watch in 2022’ by factmag, and had several DJ mag features. Both sides of their art are equally praised, with radio appearances on NTS, Oroko and Balamii and gig highlights including Boiler Room & Glastonbury alongside other iconic artists like Karen Nyame KG and Ikonika. Now they’ve partnered with SAFFRON’s in-house label to bring you their new single ‘Bad Trip’ as well as an exclusive sample pack. A time capsule back to the early-mid 00s, Bad Trip is nothing short of a dancefloor banger, and complements the ongoing y2k throwback internet craze by blending UK Funky signature sounds – bouncy, percussion and boomy basslines with catchy trance-like synths. When asked what the future holds, Fiyahdred & labelmate Ikonika say it’s about restoring the legacy of electronic and techno music back to its black and queer originators, with an aim to unify the community through merging Afro-diasporic sounds spanning the UK, Africa, and Latin America. As part of this journey, Fiyahdred recently launched their ‘embers’ project on Wildfiyah presents, featuring an extended mix series on the last Wednesday of every month, with hopes to expand the brand to hold a safe space for like minded creatives. https://www.instagram.com/p/C4OQCZ0MMyw/?img_index=1 You Might Also Like
⋆。⋆𐙚 New Single Release ⋆。: VASSIŁINA “Crooked”
⋆。⋆𐙚 New Single Release ⋆。: VASSIŁINA “Crooked” Athens and London based Vassilina returns with her first release for her upcoming album. 19.03.24 Words by Giannis Nikodimos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HFIDsGhXRs ‘Femmeland” titled “Crooked”. After releasing her debut LP Fragments in 2021, VASSIŁINA is about to unleash her most awaited album, Femmeland. With its latest release, VASSIŁINA explores themes of reflection, acceptance, and the transforming power of embracing one’s true self through a musical study that goes beyond pop and electronic music borders. A series of thirteen electronic dark-pop compositions, Femmeland is a new chapter in VASSIŁINA’s journey of self-healing, saying goodbye to a former existence in London, and coming to terms with who she is. The album is a powerful emotional journey that explores the nuances of mental health, long-term sickness, bereavement, and traumatic experiences while discovering love and trust in other people. It is a powerful experience that resonates with the strength gained in accepting one’s actual self and the acceptance of inner voices. The song starts with an intense feedback noise and a trip-hop and slow-tempo ambiance, and it transitions to a synthpop anthem filled with maximalist elements in production and a strong essence of reverbed soundscapes. It is deeply rooted in pop-structure songwriting with a lot of avant-garde elements and lyrical themes. The influences of the two cities can be heard in the sound in the subconscious vibe that the song has. Overall, it is always nice seeing talented artists from my city thriving and building a wider audience filled with fresh ideas and good artistic vision and this single is a very dynamic introduction to what is to come. ˚ ⁀➷New Album Release ˚ ༘✶˚ ⁀➷: LI YILEI “NONAGE”
⁀➷New Album Release ˚ ༘✶ : LI YILEI “NONAGE” “Growing up has always been a solitary journey, marked by forward-looking anticipation, anxiety, unripe potential, aspirations, and closures.” 19.03.24 Words by Isaac Phelan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw-VvhpZpcU In the realm of music, few endeavours are as deeply personal and evocative as exploring the corridors of one’s own childhood. London-based Chinese composer and multi-instrumentalist Li Yilei returns to Métron Records with their latest album, “NONAGE,” a poignant reflection on their youth. With a blend of introspective compositions and innovative soundscapes, Li Yilei invites listeners on a nostalgic voyage through the realms of memory and emotion. “I remember pressing piano keys like touching flowers, reading scores like looking at paintings, writing like how I would talk to myself, greeting death like how I would greet life.” Through a masterful combination of samples from old Chinese TV shows, mechanical toys, bird whistles, broken accordions and an array of acoustic and electronic instruments – some of which were personally designed and built by Li – “NONAGE” emerges as a testament to the power of music to capture the essence of childhood, offering moments of contemplative transmigration where past and present intersect. The Album artwork created by Li even includes photographs of the ‘Umbrella Wind-chime’ – one of the custom instruments built by the artist and used on the project. “This album can be viewed as an extended form of poetry and sonic landscape, an extensive dream.” The first part of the album explores the carefree and playful instances of early life, which is contrasted by the exploration of “Trauma” – the keyword that the second half of the album examines, seeking reconciliation, mending, and growth. Listeners are encouraged to engage with this album as if it were a dream, in the form of non-linear poetry. At the heart of the album lies the Chinese title “垂髫,” which translates to “childhood” or “dishevelled hair.” This evocative phrase encapsulates the carefree phase of life when children let their hair down, both figuratively and literally. For Li Yilei, “NONAGE” serves as a doorway to revisit this cherished period – a space to confront the spectrum of emotions, from fear and fearlessness to love and despair, grief and glee, curiosity and mistakes. Initially conceived as an archive project, “NONAGE” will now make its debut on March 6th, and promises listeners an intense journey of rediscovery – to revisit the innocence, wonder, and complexity of childhood through the transformative power of music. From the whimsical melodies of “Go, Little Book” to the haunting ambience of “Thé Noir, Rêvasser, Retrouvailles,” “NONAGE” serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact of childhood on our lives. In the hands of Li Yilei, this concept becomes not just a distant memory, but a living, breathing landscape waiting to be explored anew. °”˜♡New Single Release ♡¨: Ruby Duff “Undressed” Undressed, the latest single by London-based Ruby Duff, brings a genre-bending sound to the UK pop scene. 18.03.24 Words by Sophie Coombs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_zNKkpdvDI Duff describes her latest song as: “A metaphorical shedding of a mask and a release of introversion. It’s more of an obsession, a religion and an empowering movement.” Released on March 8th – International Women’s Day, no less – the single explores the themes of self-confidence and being truly Undressed. It is a mighty anthem that left me empowered and wanting to click play again straight away. Within seconds of the track playing, listeners are reminded of early Billie Eilish and the twisted sound of Bad Guy. Undressed has a similarly unique, religious sound which is paired with references in Duff’s lyrics: “Graced from hell.” Typically taboo topics for women are also brought up in the song, with references to sex and comparisons to Duff being a lion – contrary to expectations of women to be their smallest selves. The single is almost trance-like and would be perfect in suspenseful film or TV scene. It is clear Duff took inspiration from the cinematic world. She added: “Influenced heavily by movies and theatre, I wanted to create a chaotic pop track. Undressed is just that. An otherworldly, alt-pop track with a genre-bending twist that spans numerous sounds and themes as we journey through Duff’s exploration of herself and her identity. As said by NPR: “I felt like I was listening to her inner thoughts.” Duff’s vocals match the single’s themes perfectly, with elements sounding like the American girl next door while others are truly reminiscent of a cult-like chant. Combined, these make a listening experience like no other. Duff has just over 21,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, but with releases like Undressed there’s no doubt those numbers will keep increasing until we are seeing her on the big stages, possibly even taking home a Brit. ✩₊˚. ₊New Single Release ⋆☾⋆⁺ : Marta Per “Caught By Surprise”
✩₊˚. ₊New Single Release ⋆☾⋆⁺ : Marta Per “Caught By Surprise” Find yourself again in Marta Per’s latest single: ‘Caught By Surprise’ turns seclusion into strength. 15.03.24 Words by Olivia Bloore https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTS5DKlILpw Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Marta Per has just released ‘Caught By Surprise’, the electrifying single from her upcoming EP, Favourite Way of Existing. In conversation with the London based artist, Marta talked about the process of writing the track, and how it reflected a “different perspective” in both her music and her life. Marta moved from Lisbon to London at the age of 18; six years on she has since headlined shows around London and reached critical acclaim for her album titled ‘Fragments and Fingerprints’. “My music as an artist was at first more of an attempt to escape” said Marta coyly. ‘Caught By Surprise’ signals a shift in the artist’s musical output: it illustrates her experience of “coming [to London], becoming my own person, becoming my own individual”. The song came into being after intertwining musical fragments collected over two years. The first time Marta sat down to write the track, she was feeling “completely isolated” after moving to London – the final time with a “different perspective and more maturity”. ‘Caught By Surprise’ certainly feels like an anthem of liberation, with an upbeat tempo and lyrics campaigning for self-forgiveness after feeling lost. Listening to Marta’s catalogue, we can hear a sophisticated and eclectic mix of musical genres, from her film composition education to r&b, classical and jazz influences. When asked about her current inspirations, the singer listed Raye and Paramore: “a mixture of rock and jazz, that’s what I’m going for”. ‘Caught By Surprise’ certainly achieves this medley, with catchy soaring melodies underlined by energetic bass and guitar grooves. Marta is a multi-instrumentalist and producer, writing and recording every instrument but the drums from her home studio. Her voice has a rich and mellow tone, with a relaxed jazzy vibrato which smoothly illustrates every honest lyric. Over a wash of spread chord electric guitar textures, the first verse expresses simultaneously feeling disorientated whilst finding strength in hard times. Marta sings that she feels ‘stuck in a foreign land’ yet ‘there’s no place I’d rather be’. The chorus hook ‘thought my head was buried in the sand’ signals coming face to face with who you’ve become. The soaring guitar solo in the bridge compliments Marta’s floating vocalisations, and showcases the virtuosity of her playing over the punchy rock drum beat. The track ends on a final chorus, with filtered panned vocals singing the lyrics as Marta’s voice vocalises and climbs higher in a rejection of ‘feeling bitter’. ‘Caught By Surprise’ is an energetic yet insightfully honest track from Marta Per. We look forward to what her upcoming EP, Favourite Way of Existing will bring. View this post on Instagram A post shared by 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐀 𝐏𝐄𝐑 (@martapermusic) You Might Also Like

˚₊✲ 。 ˚New Single Release 。✲ : Nesta Stephan’s “Sunshine” That feel-good summer feeling wrapped in smooth and soulful vocals: Nesta Stephan’s ‘Sunshine’ brings the vibes. 14.03.24 Words by Melissa Milsom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVz63RLERuM It’s in the bitter cold that many of us start counting the days until we can head back into the routine of sitting in the warm sun after work until late into the evening. Days get longer and things feel bliss. If a song could truly transport you back to an exact moment, that’s where Nesta’s ‘Sunshine’ would take me. The London-based singer uses a spin of modern soul-sounding vocals, similar to the likes of Cleo Soul, and an assortment of jazz cords to create a sonic soundscape. This is what truly encapsulates the summertime feelings and floods her listeners with a sense of serenity and relaxation. The maintained reference to ‘sunshine’ drives the narrative of the song through feelings and emotional development, rather than lyrical progression. Some may find no use for this, but to other listeners, the continued reference allows them to achieve an almost climatic state of calm. ˚。 ˚❁ 。 ˚New Single Release 。❁。 ˚ : Grack Mack & The Pack “Dungarees” ‘Dungarees’ perfectly paints the experience of navigating one’s identity through the self-expression of fashion. 14.03.24 Words by Frankie Pigrem Following the release of their debut single ‘Mundane Sundays’, the Bristol-based, Indie four piece have created an earthly charm for themselves and are successfully ascending within the Bristol music scene. What entices listeners to Grack Mack’s sound is their use of jaunty rhythms complimented by hazy vocals that effortlessly seep through each venue that the band plays in. “I’m not letting you stop me, Your criticism doesn’t define me.” Front woman, Grace Mackenzie, uses her emotive and raw lyricism throughout Dungarees to express vulnerability in a light that many can relate to. The single intricately unravels the narrative of finding ‘a sense of self’ through a flourishing, untroubled, perspective. Grack mack voice that their single acts as “a metaphor for being care-free”, in addition to “describing a process of finding yourself”. When asked about the craft of her second single, Grace gave the insight of the tune being “brought back to life” from the help of her band after having wrote the lyrics as her angsty sixteen-year-old self. ˚₊✥ 。 ˚New Single Release 。✥ : Mother Said “Stigmata”
˚₊✥ 。 ˚New Single Release 。✥ : Mother Said “Stigmata” A story about lying and cheating your way to the top and becoming a self-proclaimed martyr to the soundtrack of a powerful bass line. ‘Stigmata’ truly has It all. 12.03.24 Words by Jamie Shovelin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xngrxChkw8 Mother Said has released their third single ‘Stigmata’. Following the trend with their previous single ‘Catholic Guilt’, the band is keeping in theme with the religious imagery. The song name itself is a term from Christian mysticism meaning bleeding, scars, or pains corresponding to those of the crucified Jesus Christ, that is on the hands, feet, near the heart, and sometimes on the head (to signify the crown of thorns placed on his head) or the back/shoulders (signify the carrying of the cross). The song tells the story of a public figure proclaiming themselves as a modern-day martyr after stealing and cheating their way to the top of the point of success. The single itself gives the feel of classic new age and punk music, not only musically but also the meaning and imagery used to promote the song. The song starts with an amazing, isolated bass riff before being accompanied by the rest of the band. Although the lead guitar takes centre stage musically you can still hear the bass riff subtly in the background which adds to the song. The cymbals repeatedly being hit throughout the bridge of the song and then being accompanied by a build-up in the drums helps to add to the breakdown of the chorus and match the vocals. This is best displayed at the big finish at the end of the single. The band’s vocals work really well for this type of song, the layered low voices from the two lead vocalists throughout the verses work incredibly well with the prominent bass riff as mentioned before. Pair this with the male backing vocals in the chorus of the song while the leads are almost shouting over them, and with the ending of the song having all of them loudly shouting over each other. Mother Said knows what works for their vocals and how to complement each other perfectly. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mother Said (@mothersaidband) You Might Also Like
