Since the beginning of the 2020s, Bands with female leads have been dominating the indie rock scene. Boy genius, Alvvays, Wet leg, Snail Mail have seen significant success throughout this decade. This trend continues with Coach Party’s and the release of their new song ‘What’s the point in life’.
The musicians from Isle of Weight started in 2019, releasing singles between the late 2010s and the early 2020s. Last week, the band released their debut album ‘Kill Joy’ to positive reviews, with the Guardians Damien Morris calling it “poppy, witty and experimental”. The lead song from that album highlights the bands eager and drive to make a mark on the current indie music scene.
Loud, explosive drums and guitars start the track off with lead singer Jess Eastwood singing about how she is bored of life’s repetitive nature which then builds up to a catchy chorus about how we are all going to die so what is the point in life. However, even if the songs message is bleak and somewhat depressing, its instrumentals are punchy and upbeat where it is almost impossible not to dance and sing the cynical melody. It is reminiscent of Alvvays record ‘Blue Rev’ released last year with its lead guitar being a constant presence throughout and the singers soft but demanding vocals.
Although the songs message is not a positive one, the band in some way’s contradicts itself. It could be argued that the loud and upbeat sounds condescend into this 2:18 minute track demonstrates exactly the point in life. It highlights that if there is no point in it, you should just have fun and enjoy it as much as you can, as the band clearly had fun and enjoyed creating this track.
This writer was impressed by how much the band was able to stand out in their first mainstream single, especially when Isle of Weight juggernauts Wet Leg seem to be dominating the British Indie music scene.
‘What’s the point in life’ was the first song released by Coach Party and was followed up by the release of their debut album ‘Kill Joy’ released on the 8th of September 2023.
