The band is formed of main singer and lyricist Gina Leonard and producer Ryan Rogers, who for their previous EPs, were romantically involved. The writing and production of the upcoming debut album coincided with their breakup and transitioning into what they describe as ‘genuine friendship’. The album is a product of this experience, and Breakfast Records describes it as ‘full of heartbreaking storytelling’.

Mawpao is rooted in the band’s kaleidoscopic sound world. With honest and ruminative lyrics, Leonard’s smooth voice is supported by synths, bass guitar, drums and backing vocals to create a dreamlike and fractured sound. The hook in the chorus repeating ‘might as well play another one’ is especially catchy and sticks with you long after the track has finished; I can imagine it working well as the soundtrack to an independent indie film. Over the last few years Mumble Tide have carefully curated their own distinctive brand through the making of their own artwork and visuals, which align with their often hazy, dreamlike, and alternative-indie sound.

Mumble Tide is reminiscent of artists like Faye Webster and Clario – all artists who combine sweet vocals with experimental yet confident and clever production. Mawpao and the music video is out now, and the debut album Might As Well Play Another One out on May 1st along with the duo’s biggest ever headline gig at the Lexington London on May 6th.
