“I want to sing Karaoke” repeats Viji, multiple times on her track, the aptly named ‘Karaoke’. It is a sentiment I share as I wrote this review, listening to the track repeatedly singing along. The single, off her forthcoming debut album So Vanilla is a fun loving track, that Fiji states “came out of a silly 10 min jam.” Inspired by Japanese punk songs, the Austrian-Brazilian singer wrote a track that incorporates the local vibe she felt when recording her album.
The single is certainly more than a silly mashup that comes after a long day at the studio. Many great songs have come at a whim and I have a feeling this is one of those tracks. It may not reach the heights of ‘Sweet Child O’Mine’, which was written in a similar manner, but it certainly should garner her much attention in the alternative scene. The song being the second single for her album in a way confirms this belief in it.
The accompanying video is weird mashup of what one sees on a night in London with a weird twist. Be it blood spirting from fighting nuns, girls with pure white eyes or lyrics being seen throughout as they would in a Karaoke bar it feels like a drug induced walk through Streatham. It is equally fitting as Viji states it is a homage to the albums recording location with the low-end vibe of the instrumentals contrasting the vibrant area and it’s night life.
It is an infectious track that I have already added to my playlist. It is genuinely one of my favourite tracks in recent memory, although I do not love it I look forward to hearing her debut album. ‘Karaoke’ is out on all platforms, and her debut So Vanilla releases October 27. Viji is currently on Tour in the U.K. and hits London on October 30, I recommend attending.
