Sophia Alexa "Losing By A Landslide"

“Being able to relate to a song is the most important thing to me.”

Sophia Alexa, the 24-year-old singer-songwriter based in London, released her new single, “Losing By A Landslide” on 22nd March and it promises to strike a chord with anybody feeling lost in their 20s.

Born to German/American parents whilst living in Amsterdam and London has allowed her to dip her toes into different cultures making her writing accessible to anyone and everyone. I only discovered her a few weeks ago but I’m so glad I did as I was immediately captivated by her ethereal voice and diary-like lexical.

In April 2022, Sophia Alexa released her EP ‘Groundwork’ where she immediately raked up several million streams. Her success didn’t end there though as she got praise from BBC Introducing as well as critical acclaims from Ones To Watch, NOTION, Wonderland and Line of Best Fit.

Her new single “Losing By A Landslide” is perfect for someone who wants to take a moment for themselves, just to sit in their feelings for a bit. To make them feel less alone. It’s easy to get caught up in the pressures surrounding you in your 20s and it’s nice to have someone hug you and say “Me too, it’s going to be ok.” This is what this song draws on. With beautiful harmonies, a banjo and a soft drum beat which kicks in in the first chorus you feel as if you could simultaneously cry and dance like no one’s watching.

As a child, she moved around a lot which made her feel like she was never really able to put down any roots. Music made her feel less alone. Her parents would often find her sitting at the kitchen table, writing songs whilst listening to some of the best singers from the 70s like Joni Mitchell and Steve Nicks. Sophia’s sound also reminds me a lot of Gracie Abrams and Lizzy McAlpine with her floaty, delicate voice.

These inspirations can defiantly be heard in my two favourite Sophia Alexa songs, “Stones” and “Buried Alive” where she talks about feeling like she can’t catch up with her peers, navigating having to act like an adult without feeling like one and being scared of leaving this world without a legacy. As someone who aspires to make a difference, this one hit close to home but I guess this is exactly what Sophia wants. When speaking to Wonderland Magazine, she stated that “being able to cry, dance and relate to a song is the most important for me.” Another quality of her writing that connected with me was how she talks to her listeners as if she is our older sister giving us advice and telling us to slow down because everything works out in the end.
I hope I can keep up with Sophia Alexa and I can’t wait to see her next project.
